In four years of activity, the European POWER UP project has led to the development of concrete solutions to tackle energy poverty.
Conclusion POWER UP, a project funded by the Horizon 2020 programme, which over the last four years has developed and tested models of social business to combat energy poverty in six European contexts European. The consortium, coordinated by Energy Cities and composed of public bodies, energy cooperatives, NGOs and academic institutions, has operated in Belgium, Spain, Italy, Czech Republic, Netherlands Bassi and Macedonia del Nord.
Results concrete and impacts measurable in the territories pilot
The project involved 569 civil servants and local stakeholders, reaching over 98,000 vulnerable citizens and activating energy and social interventions that generated 138.6 MWh/year of primary energy savings and an estimated reduction of 220 tCO₂eq/year. In the four main pilot projects – Campania, Valencia, Eeklo and Rožnov pod Radhoštěm – innovative services based on collective self-consumption, cooperatives and energy communities were implemented, with immediate benefits for 1,767 vulnerable citizens.
A comparison European on energy policy and social models
A key moment in the project’s conclusion was the final event, held in Brussels on 27 November, which brought together numerous European sister cities interested in understanding how to replicate the models tested and develop new local initiatives to combat energy poverty through inclusive, community-based energy transition solutions. The meeting provided a platform for dialogue between cities, experts and social operators, facilitating the dissemination of practices developed and the launch of cooperation initiatives.
Our contribution to the development of models of intervention
We have contributed in a significant way by supporting our partners in the definition and evaluation of models of business, in the technical-economic analysis of the investments and in the structuring of the financing of the initiatives, ensuring solidity and sustainability to the energy services introduced.
POWER UP concludes with a concrete legacy: new local players in social energy, operational tools ready for replication and a network of European cities committed to promoting a fair and energy-oriented transition energy transition that is fair and community-oriented to the community.
