The project Interreg Euro-MED EnerCmed aims to promote the energy transition in port hinterlands through the development of Renewable Energy Communities (REC), integrated with Nature-Based Solutions (NBS). The main goal is to create solutions that can combine the reduction of energy poverty in the most marginalized areas with natural based solutions capable of mitigating the heat islands typical of urban areas.
The project is being implemented in five residential areas of port cities in Spain, Croatia, Greece, and Italy. For each pilot site, the most suitable solutions for the specific needs of the case will be evaluated.
Requirements
Mediterranean hinterlands face significant challenges related to energy poverty, climate vulnerability, and limited access to sustainable energy solutions. Growing urbanization exacerbates the heat island effect, compromising quality of life and increasing energy demand. An innovative and integrated approach is needed to bridge the gap between energy supply and demand, combining technological and natural solutions to promote social inclusion for marginalized communities.
Features
EnerCmed innovatively integrates Renewable Energy Communities (RECs) with Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) to create energy-autonomous and resilient neighborhoods. RECs not only enable residents to produce and share renewable energy but also work in synergy with NBS to optimize resource use. Through the collaboration of partners, EnerCmed combines technology and nature to offer a replicable, tailored model for Mediterranean communities.
Results
EnerCmed goes beyond lowering energy bills; it delivers tangible and lasting change. In five Mediterranean cities, families will save up to 20% on energy costs, while neighborhoods will experience cooler temperatures thanks to NBS. The interventions will cut tons of CO2 emissions, transforming marginalized areas into exemplary models of sustainability. But the true impact lies beyond numbers: EnerCmed demonstrates that with vision and collaboration, technology and nature can work together to build a better future for people and the planet.
