NESOI is a Technical Assistance platform, led by Sinloc, set up to support European islands in their decarbonisation and energy transition process.
The project provided technical, economic, legal and financial assistance as well as grant resources for on-site consultancy to 54 projects and in 70 European islands, selected through public tenders.
Requirements
The topic of energy transition is of crucial importance in Europe and although funds are available on the market for financing energy efficiency and renewable energy projects, many projects struggle to be implemented. Particularly on islands, barriers to implementation are dictated by specificity factors that include: the fragmentation of projects and/or the low unit cost of technology to reach critical mass; the lack of coordination between local authorities and the limited development of synergies between projects; low awareness of funding opportunities; and the scarcity of technical skills and/or human resources dedicated to project development and coordination.
Features
The NESOI consortium, of which Sinloc was the lead partner, comprised experts in economic-financial, technical, legal and procedural, as well as environmental and social disciplines: a multidisciplinary team with proven experience on the European scene.
The intervention was characterised by: - close coordination with the European Commission's Directorate-General for Energy - a concrete approach aimed at supporting Local Authorities in structuring and implementing sustainable interventions - an offer of specialised technical assistance solutions to Local Authorities directly from the consortium members - funding of local experts, with a fund of EUR 3.1 million - the creation of a physical and digital platform to provide the islands with effective technical and financial tools as well as best practices - multiple capacity building and coaching activities for Local Authority technicians.
Results
NESOI accompanied around sixty European islands in the design and implementation of renewable energy, energy efficiency, smart grid and energy infrastructure projects.
Facility beneficiaries received technical assistance directly from consortium members and a total amount of EUR 3.1 million in resources.
The European Islands Facility has mobilised over 450 million euro in investments, with approximately 995 GWh of primary energy saved annually.
