Study aimed at the identification of a new museum site for the South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology in Bozen, which houses Otzi, a glacier mummy from the Copper Age.
Starting from the analysis of the cultural and tourist system, the examination of national and international case studies and the systematisation of the results of the interviews on the expectations of the various interest groups, five possible sites were evaluated and finally a specific proposal was formulated.
Requirements
The South Tyrolean Museum of Archaeology has approximately 300,000 visitors from all over the world each year and has further potential for development, but space in the facility is limited and there is therefore no possibility of housing the permanent exhibition of South Tyrolean history from the Palaeolithic to the Carolingian period. For this reason, the Province has launched an extensive search for the best possible museum location.
Features
The project took eight months to complete and consisted of three phases: starting with the analysis of the cultural and tourist system and the acquisition of the information set, it led to the definition of the evaluation criteria and finally to the development of the conclusions, which led first to the consideration of ten possible sites, later reduced to five, and finally to the formulation of a specific proposal.
Results
The working group, which also included the firm weber+winterle architects, ensured a multidisciplinary approach to the research, and was able to combine urban planning, architectural, construction, economic-financial and procedural knowledge.
The final decision rests with the Provincial Council, which will assess the project also taking into account aspects noted but not included in the scope of Sinloc's assignment.
