Assistance in the development of the three-year multisensory food education project "Diamo Senso al Cibo" (Let's Give Meaning to Food), aimed at nursery and primary schools in the Municipality of Viareggio. The initiative promotes a healthy, positive and conscious relationship with food among children through seven interdisciplinary meetings for teachers, three educational workshops for pupils and seven educational outings in the local area. Topics covered include: prevention of obesity and eating disorders, sensory education, reduction of "food noise" and enhancement of the educational role of school meals.
Esigenze
Schools today face significant educational and health challenges: the rise in childhood obesity requires early intervention to promote healthier food choices; many children display food neophobia and difficulty in accepting new foods, making it necessary to adopt an experiential approach that engages the senses to encourage curiosity and independence. At the same time, constant digital and advertising stimuli generate “food noise”, making it difficult to recognise hunger and satiety. Schools also need tools to help prevent eating disorders, supporting a positive body image and a balanced relationship with food even in the early stages of growth. Finally, it is essential to promote school meals as a means of promoting overall health and socialisation, strengthening the link between schools, families and the local community with a view to creating an educational community.
Caratteristiche
The project is divided into three complementary levels, namely teacher training, workshops and educational trips, which complement each other, creating a unified approach to food and health education. The project is developed around five strategic axes to ensure an innovative and interdisciplinary approach that combines nutritional, psychological and relational aspects, helping children to listen to their bodies, recognise hunger and satiety, discover new flavours and experience mealtimes as a moment of care, socialising and respect for the environment.
Risultati
The project promotes a healthy and conscious relationship with food in children through direct experiences, sensory games and activities that educate them about health as a global dimension of well-being, also encouraging the early prevention of eating disorders. The project supports teachers with practical tools and operational materials to integrate food education into everyday school life and strengthens the link between school and the local area thanks to educational experiences at local organisations.
